A Time For Reflection
As we begin the last month of summer, I can't
help starting to think of the fall. The children are
oblivious to their impending return to school but we, as
parents, begin to plan. The days seem long and the
nights short as we are occupied with the
extra family activities that need to be crunched into the
last four weeks of the summer.
Ah, but then the seasons begin to change and suddenly
our home is empty again. No sounds of the children
playing, no steady flow of visitors; just you and your
business. From the quiet of your office you prepare to
start revenue generating activities and you ask
yourself - "What am I doing here? ".
Well, this year, I would like to suggest that you ponder
those questions before that day comes. Use August to
get yourself mentally prepared. That way, when
September arrives and the children are in
to their school routine, you will be ready to tackle this
year with purpose and vigor! Grab a seat and take a
moment to read about ways to reflect on your
business. Speak to a Coach who understands home-
based businesses. Take August to reflect and you will
enjoy the fall season that much more.
In our future issues, we will look at ways to not only
make your business more successful and to turn your
vision into reality. We will also examine how to make
money and how to manage your money. Until then -may
all your efforts be effective.

A New Season To Prepare |
 |
In many parts of the world summer is slowly coming to
an end and people are looking at choices they will have
to make in the fall. For some it will be school for the
children, for others it will be taking a new approach to
their business. For many others, this fall may be their
first venture into starting a business. Statistics show
that 65% of new businesses are started in the Fall. It is
very interesting to know that with the change of season
from summer to fall so many people begin to get
serious about changing their lives.
As the change of season approaches, I would like to
encourage everyone to use the month of August as a
time to reflect. Ask yourself some questions about the
business that you are currently in. Does the work you
do leave you feeling fulfilled? Do you have a burning
passion or ambition that is unfulfilled? Are you bored
with your work? Why do you stay in the same line of
work? Are you ready for a change? Do you want to
consider starting your own home-based business? If you
are prepared to begin a "Home Based Business" this
fall, you may want to consider asking yourself a few
more questions. What do you really enjoy doing? What
brings you joy, however small it may be? What type of
business could you begin that would allow you to feel
energized? What are the most important reasons you
can list for starting your own business? What are your
biggest concerns?
If you have been in business a while and are finding it is
becoming more a hobby than a business, you may also
want to consider taking some time to reflect. How can
you begin to create more revenue from the many
projects you have accumulated around your office? If
you wanted to sell your business today, could you put a
dollar value to it? Could you list at least two people who
would be interested in buying it? If you have been in
Business for a while and it isn't bringing to you the
results you were hoping for - this month, sit down and
list the reasons you wanted your own business in the
first place. Examine the reasons you have spent so
much money and effort to make it happen and the
reasons why you feel compelled to continue.
Having a business is not easy and having one in your
home can be even more of a challenge, especially if you
have more than one role in your family (e.g. main
income earner, caregiver, home maker, etc.). The
reasons you originally chose to start your home-based
business may no longer be valid. Weigh carefully the
choices you have made, re- examine your reasons for
continuing. Once your reasons are clear and if they are
good enough, re- focus your efforts and enjoy the fall
season.
In September I will be introducing several workshops on
How to manage your time and money when running a
Succesfull business out of your home.

Bringing Home The Business |
 |
While no one knows exactly how many Americans
operate a home-based business, just about everyone
agrees their numbers are legion and growing every day.
Unfortunately, most books directed their way are either
too elementary or too wide-ranging to be really useful--
at least without stacks of supplementary resources.
Bringing Home the Business, on the other hand, is both
refreshing and valuable because it focuses on just one
aspect: getting and keeping customers. Significantly, it
also lays everything out in a format busy entrepreneurs
can easily peruse and absorb.
Kim T. Gordon, a small- office/home-office specialist,
divides the advice into 30 essential areas like Manage
Lists and Callbacks. Each begins with a succinct "truth,"
such as "You don't need a staff for contact management;
you need the right system." What follows are plenty of
relevant details: why contact-management software is
helpful and how to select an appropriate program (or
develop an effective paper-based tracking system).
There's no extraneous information on creating corporate
structures or choosing office furniture, just solid
recommendations on this critical aspect of establishing
and growing a commercial enterprise that happens to be
headquartered in the home. --Howard Rothman

Roller Coasters and your Home -Based Business |
 |
|
I never have liked roller coasters. I actually start to
break out in a cold sweat with the mere mention of one!
It brings back memories of my last ride on one, and the
lunch I had prior to the ride. Need I say more?!
You know how we help our clients gain new
perspectives? Well, with coaching I have developed a
whole new perspective on roller coasters. It's been like
a roller coaster ride, a fun one at that, adding coaching
to my training and consulting services I offer from my
in home office. The fun parts of the "ride" are wearing
pajamas all day long if I wish, showering when I feel
like it, NO make up and panty hose, scheduling my own
hours, running errands when needed between calls and
appointments, having lunch dates with friends, and
eating what and when I feel like it, just to name a few.
The thrill of having a long time prospect say "yes" to
coaching, reaching a goal that I have set for myself,
receiving checks, getting clients to an "ah ha" moment,
and receiving a standing ovation at a speaking
engagement, truly make the ride so much more
enjoyable. All of that is like the roller coaster ride
being over for me!
The down side of the ride, when the roller coaster car
climbs up that big hill, well, that's the continual
marketing. I remember Candye telling me that I would
spend 90% of my time marketing. How about 98% of
the time! You know, the calling prospects, following up,
not receiving checks and following up, hearing "it
sounds good, but I'm interested". Just continuing filling
the pipeline! The word persistence has taken on a
whole new meaning as well. Other parts of that up hill
ride include: cancellations and distractions from family
members that think you're not really working if you're
at home! The biggest up hill climb for me is working
alone. Sometimes I need that solace to finish a project,
or reflect on my coaching with a client. Other times, I
would love to have the opportunity to brainstorm,
bounce ideas off someone, and receive the energy that
so often can happen in an office setting. A couple other
things are not having the free technical support for
glitches in your computer, your web site, the Internet
and email. This may not bother you if your IT savvy!
I'm not.
So, roller coasters for me have a whole new meaning -
an in home office! For the first time in my life, I'm
enjoying the ride and don't want it to end. I would
prefer more of the thrills that come with it, but I
wouldn't grow if I didn't have those up hill rides! I
always know what's on the other side!
